I’m - accidentally - a first-generation American citizen. I was born in the US while my parents were on an extended vacation so while I was born here, I grew up in Dublin, Ireland. Our relatives are all Irish and English, my siblings are all Irish, and my most formative years were spent growing up in a very European environment.
I’ve long wanted to return, but always planned on it being a retirement plan. Maybe for no great reason - I can ply my trade anywhere, these days - but such a big move always seemed more practical as a post-working sort of thing.
Plans changed.
Through some weird twists of friendships and fates, a few life changes are underway. Not just a move but second careers for us both, likely, and more; one particular opportunity has set the horizon rather solidly: we expect to have moved more or less by this Fall.
So…we’re currently in a slow-but-hectic process of prepping a house to sell, purging stuff to not have to move, eyeing houses to buy and maybe flats for short term rental… Dreaming more or less realistic business opportunities as second careers while preparing to Do The Same Thing If Needed. Wrestling with complicated feelings that cover the entire spectrum from excitement to dread as the reality of change hits every interpersonal relationship ever, bringing some closer and moving nearly all farther away.

It’s already been a busy and anxiety-inducing year - both within and, of course, without our domains of control - but more is yet to come with the certainty of death and taxes (…including, I guess, taxes, being that time of year…). I hope I can maintain enough discipline to keep updates coming here, posted to Mastodon, copied to Discord and maybe in a couple of other avenues (not Facebook, most likely).
